Engineering masterpieces

Some of the examples below might not seem like masterpieces now, but when they were invented they were groundbreaking.

The airplane

Did you know that humans were not able to venture abroad by flight until the beginning of the 20th Century.  We take flying for granted now, because it is so common and a part of everyday life for many people.  Engineers were responsible for achieving the first ever flight that lasted only twelve seconds.  Just think how far we have come since then thanks to the hard work of flight engineers.

The internet

Many people probably don"t even realise that the creation of the internet was thanks to a series of engineering inventions.  The creation of the internet required some extremely highly skilled engineers and computer specialists.

Fibre Optics

Fibre optics uses the knowledge of both engineering and applied science.  This knowledge is then implemented into the creation of optical fibres.  Fibre optics were initated by Jacques Babinet and Daniel Colladon in the 1840"s.

Motorways

There used to be times when you could not easily drive to different parts of the country and roads were littered with obstacles and took unneeded detours.  People used to have to travel for hours along country roads to go short distances because they weren"t any direct routes.  The UK"s first motorway was the Preston Bypass which is now called the M6.  The M6 is now the longest motorway in the UK.
