It"s no exaggeration to say that without the technological skills of everyone from research scientists to system administrators, the modern world of globalised commerce and industry would be impossible.

However, people working in technology jobs, despite their importance, are generally the people working behind the scenes rather than in the public eye.

Many people - even those who directly rely upon computerised systems - fail to realise just how much the modern economy relies upon the work of these people.

For example, if it wasn"t for the multi-tasking and clinical organisation skills of system administrators, then no business would be able to maintain a digital infrastructure. Payrolls would have to be delivered and processed by hand, each office would be forced to share a single phone line, there would be no such thing as a local network and all the equipment in the world wouldn"t be worth the trouble.

Likewise, without the people who develop the tools for this infrastructure - the software engineers in all manner of technology fields - then computers would be nothing more than a complicated calculator.

Even without this fairly hyperbolic set of possibilities, any business that didn"t employ some kind of technical staff would completely fail to compete in the modern world. Technological advances have increased efficiency exponentially in ways unimagined even during the hey-day of the industrial revolution. "Labour saving" devices aren"t just mechanical manufacturing and processing tools anymore; they"re spreadsheets, databases, design and publishing packages - you name the type of work and the chances are a technical solution exists for it.

Of course dealing with even the most minor of software and hardware problems requires having the right knowledge and the reality is that though many people can use computers, comparatively few understand them in any detail. Most people don"t need to - until something goes wrong. Then, you need someone who does know how computers work, who understands why program X cannot compute function Y.

It may not be the most glamorous position in the world but there"s a reason why so many technology jobs are well paid and why skilled staff are in high demand; without them, modern life in the 21st century would be practically impossible.
