Lay off: How to Bring Yourself Back Up

I experience lay off in early 2007 at the ripe age of 33. Maybe it is too young for me to be in such situation but nowadays, people die from heart attack at a much younger age! I was not the only one finding myself without paycheck back then. There were hundreds of others but to this date, I can see only a handful crawls back out of the pit safely.

A "closed" question is one that the can only be answered with a "yes" or "no" response. It doesn"t mean that it can"t be used, but it is limiting. An "open" question is one that is based on the 5 W"s-who, what, when, where, and why. You might add a "how" in there as well. These types of questions demand the type of information that make a solid interview.

When you are preparing your questions, think about what you want to ask. Think about what others might want to know as well. Don"t ask questions that are meaningless. Consider whether the question you are asking has any value to your purpose. Ask your interviewee to explain something. Whatever you choose to ask, listen carefully to answers that might serve as a springboard for further questioning. Practice your questions on a family member, or friend.

By using the 5W approach to an interview, you will find that preparing your questions in advance will ease your nerves and remove some of the stress. Be in control of the interview. Don"t let the the interview control you.
